After Ian Dickenson farm, we worked on Colvin’s farm which is located in Bracknell, 20 minutes in the South West of Launceston.
Andrew Colvin bought this farm in 1981 and managed it until last year when he handed over the running of the property to his son Scott., who came back to the farm 4 years ago
At the beginning, it was a whole sheep farm but when the market collaps, Andrew decided to moved for meat sheep.
Andrew chose to integrate trees on his farm more for an ecologic reason than economic.. He tried to get a part of the property back to how it was developed before. He are using only Tasmanian native species and mainly in polyculture.
For him, trees can offer a shelter for his sheeps and other animals like wallabys, birds, small insects… and it’s a better environment for working for him. This plue value is very important for Andrew.
Scott decided to follow his father and continues to plant more trees. Today he runs around 5 000 sheeps and he wants to expand his buisness !
Après la ferme d’Ian Dickenson, nous avons travaillé dans la ferme des Colvin, située à Bracknell, à 20 minutes au Sud Ouest de Launceston.
Andrew Colvin a acheté sa ferme en 1981 et en était le propriétaire jusqu’à l’année dernière lorsqu’il la passa à son fils Scott, revenu travailler à la ferme familiale 4 ans au par avant.
Au début c’était une ferme de laine de mouton mais rapidement Andrew changea pour des moutons à viande.
Andrew choisit d’intégrer des arbres dans sa ferme principalement pour des raisons écologiques. Il essaye de remettre à l’état sauvage certaines parties de sa propriété. Pour cela, il utilise uniquement des espèces natives de Tasmanie et principalement associées en polyculture.
Pour lui, les arbres offrent un abri pour ses moutons, pour d’autres animaux tels que les wallabies, des oiseaux… et un meilleur environnement de travaille pour lui.
Scott a décidé de suivre son père, il continue de planter plus d’arbres. Aujourd’hui sa ferme compte environ 5000 moutons et il espère pouvoir agrandir son cheptel !
